BletterbachschluchtHiking at the BletterbachThe Bletterbachschlucht is also affectionately known as South Tyrol’s Grand Canyon. The Bletterbach is a canyon, an adventure park, an educational resource and a natural monument all in one. Hikes through the ravine and around the "Geoparc Bletterbach", also nominated as a UNESCO world natural heritage, become a special adventure, a journey across millions of years of the earth’s history.
Europe’s unique canyon, South Tyrol’s Bletterbachschlucht, offers a fascinating insight into the Palaeozoic era. This impressive ravine was made accessible to the public in an attractive way by setting up a visitors’ centre, a woodland nature trail as well as a geo-trail with visual aids. The stones that can be found in the Bletterbachschlucht were shaped millions of years ago. The water of the Bletterbach has burrowed deeply into the earth in Aldein, south west of Bozen, to a depth of more than 400 metres and a length of twelve kilometres during the last 15,000 years. At the same time it left an impressive ravine that is unique in Europe. Here hikers and families with children, but also scientists and geo tourists have an opportunity to get to know the development of the earth and mankind from unfamiliar vantage points. This awe-inspiring canyon is indeed an adventure park, an educational resource and a natural monument all at once. |
